WYANG KULIT "PULASIO"
From Yogyakarta, ca. 1900

This wayang Kulit (shadow Puppet), Pulasio, is from Yogyakarta, central Java, Indonesia. This is a very beautiful wayang! The puppet is in amazing condition even considering it's substantial age. The carving is very intricate (especially around the head and hair) and the paints are in excellent condition. The sarong has been beautifully rendered.
This character is Pulasio. He is a character that was created by a dalang in Yogyakarta. I am not familiar with this character but I was told by a dalang that in this local addition to the wayang kulit stories he is the brother of Anoman (also known as Hanoman) and only appears during the story about Dewi Sumbadra and her request for a wedding gift of two monkeys.
The condition is excellent. The paint is original. There is some very minor wear to the paint as you might expect with age and use. The support sticks are black water buffalo horn. There is some very minor leather loss in the hair and a small restoration. Also there is a small resoration at the back of the sarong towards the feet.

The size is 89.0 cm long (35.0 inches) including the support stick (without the support stick it's 68.0 cm (26.8 inches), by 39.0 cm wide (15.4 inches). The weight is approximately 1.8 kg (4.0 pounds).

WAYANG KULIT "TIGER"

From Semarang, Central Java,

ca. 1870

This wayang Kulit (shadow Puppet), Tiger (Macan in Bahasa Indonesian), is from Semarang, central Java, Indonesia. This piece comes from a time when the Tiger was very plentiful and roamed throughout Indonesia. This is a very beautiful wayang! The puppet is in excellent condition even considering it's substantial age (there is wear to the paint through age and many performances).

The leather used to make this puppet is very thick. The carving of the face and claws is very finely done.

The condition is excellent. The paint has been redone at some point in the puppet's life. There is wear to the paint as you might expect with age and use. The thick leather is in excellent condition. The support stick, replaced at some point, is wood.

The size is 55.0 cm high (21.7 inches) including the support stick (without the support stick it's 40.0 cm (15.7 inches), by 66.0 cm wide (26.0 inches). The weight is approximately 1.7 kg (3.7 pounds).
